A second volume of my short plays, Six of One Volume II, was published by Stagescripts on 10th March.
SIX OF ONE VOLUME II
Six short plays with running times of between 10 and 15 minutes:
AS I DRAW NEAR YOU (1m, 1f)
Alison From time to time I have an urge to smoke. Particularly when I’m a little on edge.
Nigel And are you a little on edge?
Alison Yes. I think I am. Aren’t you?
Nigel I wasn’t. Although maybe now I am.
BEE ALL, END ALL (6m, 1f)
Six ‘waiters’ pass the time as best they can, not knowing who she will choose, how she makes her choice or why. All that’s certain is that one of them will be chosen. And then another. And then another. It may be now; it may be later. In the meantime, worrying won’t help. A dark, dystopian allegory in a post-patriarchal world.
IT ISN'T YOU (1m, 1f)
Jonathan We’re being very grown up about this, aren’t we
Karen We are grown up, Jonathan. And there’s no reason not to be.
Jonathan No. I suppose not.
Karen Were you hoping for some histrionics? I could weep and scream and tear my hair if you like ...
MATCH & MIX (2m, 2f)
Henry There’s nothing to fret about it. Alisdair and Flo are both adults. They’re both single. They’re both lonely ...
Caroline Are they?
Henry Lonely? Of course they are.
Caroline If you say so.
Henry The point is they’ll either fall into each other’s arms …
Caroline … or they’ll tear each other’s throats out.
SORRY / JE M'EXCUSE (2m, 2f)
Kate I’m sorry. I was up hideously early this morning to catch a flight and I’m feeling a touch tetchy.
Daniel I’m feeling a touch tetchy myself. Reunions really aren’t my thing. I went to one of these things twenty years ago. No one I wanted to see turned up, and people I hoped never to see again were swarming about like bluebottles. I vowed not to attend another.
Kate And yet you’re here.
THREE INTO TWO (WON'T GO) (1m, 1f, 1m/f)
Alistair You scroll through the profiles, don’t you? You choose someone you’d like to hook up with. You check out their photographs on the website. They look fine and you agree to meet. Then, when you get together … When you find yourself in the same space … When you’re sitting opposite them … It can be a terrible let-down.
